Installation works starts at the SOLARIS building

Installation works starts at the SOLARIS building

At the beginning of May 2014, the building was officially handed over to the SOLARIS team officially from the contractor, Łęgprzem. This is an important moment because the installation works and deliveries of parts and equipment necessary for the assembly of the synchrotron can intensify now.

The power supplies for the primary electromagnets for the storage ring were the latest important delivery. These electromagnets produce a required magnetic field to keep the high energy electron beam in an orbit. The largest of the five power supplies has a power of 230 kW and constantly produces the direct current intensity of 830 A down to 0.1 A for hundreds of hours of work. High stability with a strong current is the distinguishing feature of the power supplies used in our accelerator electromagnets - explained Robert Nietubyć, accelerator magnets specialist in the SOLARIS team.

The production of these power supplies was particularly difficult and it required a wide range of tests. Further tests and measurements will be needed during the commissioning of the synchrotron – said Nietubyć.

Thirty-six blocks of concrete were placed into the storage ring tunnel. Their aim is it to support the main magnets. One magnet will be supported by three blocks and each of them weights over a ton. Every support must be in the correct position to hold magnets load and ensure stability.

All these activities bring us closer to the final, which is the launching of the SOLARIS Synchrotron.
