Contract for supply and installation of superconducting wiggler

Contract for supply and installation of superconducting wiggler

On August 21, 2020, the SOLARIS Centre signed the contract for the supply of a superconducting wiggler, which will be the source of synchrotron radiation for the SOLCRYS beamline. The supplier of the device will be the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics (Russia).

The scope of the contract covers the design, production, factory acceptance tests, delivery, installation, on-site acceptance tests and commissioning of a superconducting wiggler with indirect cooling in the SOLARIS synchrotron storage ring. The magnetic field induction of the device will be 4 T. The wiggler will shift the critical energy of the synchrotron beam to the value of about 6 keV.

The SOLCRYS beamline will consist of two independent optical branches, each equipped with a single end station, which will work simultaneously and independently of each other. The first one will be used for the structural diffraction studies (especially for protein crystallography). It will use the central part of the radiation cone generated by the superconducting wiggler. The second branch will be used for the low angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) research and will use the side part of the radiation cone.

The energy of the photons used at the SOLCRYS beamline will be in the range of 4-25 keV and the total power emitted in the wiggler will not exceed 14 kW.

The order will be completed within two years.
