Cryo – electron microscope Glacios is already a part of the SOLARIS Centre research infrastructure

Cryo – electron microscope Glacios is already a part of the SOLARIS Centre research infrastructure

We are happy to announce that on 13th January 2021 the representatives of SOLARIS Centre and LABSOFT company officially signed in the handover protocol of Glacios cryo- electron microscope. It will extend the offer of the National Cryo-EM Centre.

Along with this fact our Centre becomes the only one in Poland, which provides two complementary cryo-electron microscope with the highest technical parameters.

The purchase of a microscope was realized under the EU's Smart Growth Operational Programme (Measure 4.2 "Development of modern research infrastructure of the science sector"). An operation of the second, next to the Titan Krios G3i, cryo- electron microscope is dedicated not only to the scientific experiments but also to the commercial companies interested in the research using Cryo – EM technique (around 40% of research time).

"We have been trying to purchase a microscope because Polish companies keep asking us about the possibility of carrying out measurements using the Cryo-EM technique" - says Michał Młynarczyk, Finance and Administration Deputy Director at SOLARIS.

“We are keen to enable Polish companies to access this exciting new technology, which is developing very fast and is currently becoming the most important one used in structural biology. The achievable results facilitate the understanding of the cellular mechanisms behind human diseases, the design of new drugs, and the optimization of existing drug molecules. The technique is also successfully being applied in nanotechnology and other fields an important for science and industry” - adds Sebastian Glatt, Max Planck Research Group leader at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology, which is the main partner of SOLARIS in the implementation of the centre.

The valuable purchase has already undergone the first tests with very satisfying results. During the upcoming stage we will be testing and commissioning the performance with friendly users. The first open call for measurement time of commercial and non-commercial institutions is planned for the third quarter of this year. The research  will be charged. A detailed calendar of available research time as well as a price list will be posted soon on the SOLARIS Centre website.
