Prof. Marcin Nowotny winner of the FNP Prize

On November 3rd, we met this year's winners of the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP) Prize. Among others, the winner of this most prestigious scientific award in Poland is Prof. Marcin Nowotny. A long-time collaborator of the SOLARIS Centre, he co-authored the concept of establishing a cryo-electron microscopy facility at SOLARIS.

The Foundation for Polish Science Prize, also known as "Polish Nobel", is given to scientists for outstanding achievements in their field. The prizes have been awarded since 1992, and the group of winners already includes 113 people. This year, scientists from three disciplines were distinguished as award winners - Prof. Marcin Nowotny, Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski and Prof. Adam Łajtar. 

In the area of life and earth sciences, the award went to Prof. Nowotny at the International Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology in Warsaw, for explaining the molecular mechanisms of DNA damage recognition and repair. The professor studies protein complexes that interact with DNA and are involved in DNA repair mechanisms. In his research, he uses structural biology methods, including X-ray crystallography, and cryo-EM.

Prof. Nowotny is actively involved in the scientific community, especially in the field of structural biology. From the beginning, he was involved in the conception of the cryo-electron microscopy facility at the SOLARIS Center. He was also a co-author of the Cryo-EM funding application, as well as an advisor on the application to expand it to include infrastructure for sample prequalification and research services for industry built around the GLACIOS microscope.

Only this year, two publications from Prof. Nowotny's laboratory, where research was carried out on Titan Krios at the SOLARIS Center, were published.
