CIRI beamline installed a new microscope.

CIRI beamline installed a new microscope.

Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp has completed the installation of the mIRage-LS, Submicron Multimodal (IR+Raman+FL) microscope on the CIRI beamline in SOLARIS Centre, which features submicron imaging and IR + Raman spectroscopy combined with wide-field fluorescence imaging capabilities.

In addition, CIRI beamline supervisor Dr. Tomasz P. Wrobel worked with PSC to develop a customised probe beam polarisation/Raman beam polarization capability that when paired with the inherent IR polarization, provides for a unique, submicron polarized vibrational micro-spectroscopy tool to explore molecular orientation in materials with a level of detail previously not possible.
Furthermore, the mIRage-LS, submicron multimodal microscope will serve well supporting the wide range of experiments often conducted at synchrotrons, particularly in fields such Life Science where its submicron and hence sub-cellular IR resolving powers, now coupled with fluorescence imaging to help “guide” the measurements, for both fixed and live (in water) samples (cells, bacteria, tissues, bone etc) will open up lots of new and exciting research possibilities.
Expanding the applications further, materials science, polymers science, environmental studies in areas such as microplastics to explore the characterization of the otherwise difficult to measure <10um or even <1um fraction, through cultural heritage, geochemical studies and beyond will all be enhanced by this new and exciting analytical tool.
