2D boron layer as a nanoscopic diffraction grating

2D boron layer as a nanoscopic diffraction grating

09.01.2024
A multimethod investigation of 2D boron sheet - i.e. borophene - on the surface of iridium is reported in a paper by an international team of researchers led by physicists from the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, Croatia. The study, published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, highlights the nanomodulated properties of epitaxial borophene which acts as an electron diffraction grating.

The effect of temperature treatment on the microstructure evolution of Inocnel 625 superalloy

The effect of temperature treatment on the microstructure evolution of Inocnel 625 superalloy

29.01.2024
A group of researchers from the Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science at the AGH University of Krakow, SOLARIS NSRC, and the Institute of Materials Engineering at the University of Silesia in Katowice led by Beata Dubiel studied the microstructure evolution and hardness behaviour of the Inconel 625 superalloy additively manufactured by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) subjected to high-temperature annealing. As a result of systematic study, the various strengthening and softening mechanisms acting during high-temperature annealing of Inconel 625 LPBF have been identified.

Origins of the unexpected thermoelectric properties of group IV monochalcogenides

Origins of the unexpected thermoelectric properties of group IV monochalcogenides

15.11.2023
A team of scientists from Wrocław University of Science and Technology in cooperation with researchers from the URANOS beamline conducted a series of experiments on layered semiconductors GeS, SnS, and SnSe using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The investigation revealed characteristic features of the electronic band structure, potentially responsible for the enhanced thermoelectric properties.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production without causing greenhouse gas emissions

Photocatalytic hydrogen production without causing greenhouse gas emissions

08.11.2023
Scientists from the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology, the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Fuzhou University, Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, and the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre have published a paper in the Chemical Engineering Journal in which they present a Cu/TiO2 nano photocatalyst enabling experimentally confirmed photocatalytic hydrogen production without causing greenhouse gas emissions. They explained the results of the photoreforming reaction of an aqueous methanol solution under UV LED illumination. To investigate the degree of copper oxidation on the surface of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements were carried out using structure data close to the X-ray absorption edge (XANES technique) at the ASTRA beamline.
