The first stage of SOLARIS construction completed

The first stage of SOLARIS construction completed

At the beginning of February 2013, one of the key stages of the SOLARIS synchrotron construction was completed. Despite poor weather, the core shell has been finished and further construction works inside the building are progressing according to the schedule. The building will be fully completed in the third quarter of this year.

The structure is located in Ruczaj, a district of Kraków, on the premises of the Third Campus of the Jagiellonian University, just behind the Library of the Pontifical University of John Paul II. To all appearances the building is quite small; Nevertheless, its most important part is located underground.

At the lowest level, 7.7 metres below ground, there is a technological tunnel and a linac tunnel in which beams of electrons will be accelerated. Slightly higher, but still below the ground level (-3.2 m), there is a floor with the ring and a place for end-stations. The building will also include offices and welfare rooms, laboratories and a conference room. The most important task related to the implementation of the project is yet to come. As soon as the building is in use, individual components of the machine will be assembled. Certainly, it will be a great challenge for the SOLARIS team as such a project will be carried out in Poland for the first time. At every stage, we cooperate closely with experts from international synchrotron facilities and draw on their experience - said Prof. Marek Stankiewicz, Director of the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre. We plan that the device will be made available to interested research groups at the beginning of 2015 -  he added.

The cost of this project amounts to nearly 153 million zlotys, including nearly 50 million zlotys for the building itself. The project is financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007-2013.
