Synchrotron covered with concrete slabs

Synchrotron covered with concrete slabs

In March 2015, the synchrotron tunnel was covered with 180 concrete slabs. Each slab weighs from three to five tons - depending on the size and concrete from which it was made.

The synchrotron must be shielded in order to protect the users from electromagnetic radiation and therefore allow them to work safely in the experimental hall.

The completion of the installation of the synchrotron components and covering the storage ring tunnel with concrete slabs allows us to start another, very important process. It is the final, precise positioning of machine components - said Paweł Bulira, synchrotron installation coordinator. Now we can run and test individual subsystems, such as high frequency, cooling, power supply, diagnostics, and control systems to prepare the synchrotron start-up - he said.
