A new dimension of X-ray tomography

A new dimension of X-ray tomography

A novel method of X-ray tomography, developed by scientists Katarzyna Sowa and Paweł Korecki from the SOLARIS Centre and the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, the Jagiellonian University has been acknowledged by the prestigious Optical Society (OSA) Publishing, and the image obtained by physicists was featured as the Image of the week.

Obraz prześwietlanych mikroobiektówThe imaging method, described in the article X-ray tomography with multiple ultranarrow cone beams utilizes confocal, ultranarrow cone X-ray beams in the nonconventional geometry, which eliminates the need of sample translation during measurement and acquisition of sharp projections of imaged microobjects.

The featured image shows an artificial tomographic phantom, i.e., borosilicate glass capillary, filled with SiO2 spheres, with the diameter of 25µm. In the future, the technique will be available for the users of the POLYX beamline at the SOLARIS Centre, which is currently under construction and is expected to be operational in 2022.
