NCPS SOLARIS received funding for the years 2021-2025

NCPS SOLARIS received funding for the years 2021-2025

The National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS, operating at the Jagiellonian University, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science, will receive approximately PLN 200 million. These funds will ensure the maintenance of the Centre's unique instruments and free access to it for all research groups for the next 5 years. The received funding will also enable development work and activities to activate the domestic and foreign scientific community.

The aim of the project is to support research and development work carried out with the use of synchrotron radiation and cryomicroscopy. They will be carried out using the unique research infrastructure of our Center.

The received funding will enable the continuity of research, as well as the development of the center and the establishment and development of scientific cooperation in the field of using and maximizing the potential of NCPS SOLARIS, as well as carrying out activities to increase the number of users of our research infrastructure.

Research techniques available in SOLARIS serve scientists from various fields of science: physics, chemistry, materials science and life science. Research conducted at NCPS SOLARIS concern phenomena and materials, finding direct practical applications. Such research includes those concerning materials for the production, storage and transmission of energy, more efficient electronics, material processing, etc. Synchrotron research also contributes to climate protection and increasing the efficiency of resource and raw materials management, as well as (with the use of a cryo-microscope), the development of science bio-medical, with particular emphasis on the structural biology of pathogens.

Some information about NCPS SOLARIS:
- we received 211 applications for access, the international evaluation committee approved 130,
- the demand for research exceeds the centre's time capacity by 50%,
- 22 Polish research units have used the SOLARIS infrastructure at least once,
- in 2020, we provided the scientific community with 3,600 measurement hours, of which 2,400 hours were granted to domestic units, and 1,200 - to foreign units.

The above data is for the period from October 2018 to December 2020.
