Summary of the thirteenth call for proposals

Summary of the thirteenth call for proposals

The thirteenth call for proposals at the SOLARIS Centre ended on April 3. Once again, the Centre received a record number of applications. Scientific teams from all over the world submitted 171 applications.

The thirteenth call for proposals on SOLARIS infrastructure received a total of 171 applications. This result confirms an upward trend in the number of researchers interested in measurements at SOLARIS. Call after call the Centre is receiving more and more applications. A total of seven beamlines and a cryomicroscope will be available to users. All applications will be reviewed by external experts for formality, sample safety and the merit of the planned research work. Decisions on the allocation of research time are expected before the holiday season begins.
The ASTRA beamline and Cryo-EM were the most popular among the applications submitted. 40 and 43 applications were submitted for research time using these techniques, respectively. For the recently opened POLYX beamline, 19 applications were submitted, while for the URANOS beamline, 18 were submitted. Other beamlines were in demand, respectively: PIRX - 17 applications, PHELIX - 11 applications, CIRI - 10 applications, DEMETER PEEM - 6 and DEMETER STXM - 7 applications.
It is worth mentioning that the trend of nationality representation of submitted applications continues. In the described call, less than 20% are applications submitted by scientists from abroad (Germany, the Czech Republic and Spain are the countries of origin of the largest number of researchers), while 80% are national projects. In the near future we will have data on the most represented scientific fields. It is noteworthy that the humanities have made a permanent place among the subjects of applications for research time in SOLARIS.
Scientific groups will be able to carry out their experiments using SOLARIS infrastructure from September to February 2025.
We would like to remind you that it is possible to apply for the so-called "rapid access" to research infrastructure. This mode makes it possible to check whether the planned experiment has a chance to be implemented in the regular call for proposals or there is a need to conduct research quickly due to its potentially high scientific value.
