A new chapter in QPI imaging of the biological material

A new chapter in QPI imaging of the biological material

A group of researchers, including SOLARIS scientist Dr. Tomasz Wróbel, contributed to the improvement of imaging methods by creating a new technique: confocal QPI - Quantitative Phase Imaging.

A new variation of the imaging technique will allow histopathologists to diagnose cancer with greater ease. Its advantage is to examine tissue samples without staining them and also with high spatial resolution, which was difficult to achieve in another QPI method.

An additional feature is the possibility of imaging without destroying the sample, often problematic when using other techniques. If we talk about the spatial resolution, it also has better possibilities than Infrared Imaging (IR) because it gives more information about the morphology of the sample using visible light - explains Dr. Tomasz Wróbel, one of the authors of the publication. This new technique is an expansion of our previous cancer diagnosis research with Machine Learning algorithms – adds the researcher.

It is worth mentioning that there is a potential to combine this technique with the under-construction SOLAIR beamline, which will allow for even greater possibilities.
The paper "High-resolution label-free imaging of tissue morphology with confocal phase microscopy" was published in the “Optica” journal (IF=9.7).
