The first electrons in the SOLARIS synchrotron

In December 2014, the SOLARIS synchrotron RF gun produced the first electrons. The gun is the place where electrons begin their life. Then they make their way to the linear accelerator, where they are accelerated nearly to the speed of light.

 And all this in order to obtain synchrotron radiation, a most exceptional light for research purposes.

The production of the first electrons from the RF gun was preceded by many hours of work by the physicists, IT specialists, and engineers of SOLARIS. We waited in stress to find out whether all the parameters had been correctly calculated and whether everything had been correctly designed – said Adriana Wawrzyniak, the coordinator of the operation. We still have a lot of work and many tests ahead of us, but this first success augurs well for the near future when we plan to start up the synchrotron - she said.
