City of Krakow Award for Structural Biology Core Facility team

City of Krakow Award for Structural Biology Core Facility team

On the 15th June 2021, the gala of the City of Krakow Awards took place. One of the winners in the field of „science and technology” was the group of six researches - Structural Biology Core Facility from Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology JU: Dr. hab. Sebastian Glatt – leader, Michał Rawski,PhD, Kinga Wróbel, MSc and Przemysław Grudnik, PhD, Piotr Wilk, PhD, Klaudia Woś, MSc. The first three mentioned scientists are also a part of the team of the National Cyo-Em Centre operating at the National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS.

The award has been granted since 1933 to outstanding residents of Krakow city. It is an expression of recognition for works for the development and strengthening of the creative and scientific potential of the city.

We are proud that between members of our SOLARIS team are also outstanding researchers and strong scientific personalities. We are happy that the government of Krakow city, including president Jacek Majchrowski, appreciates the role of science in the development and promotion of the city - says Prof. Dr. Marek Stankiewicz, director of the SOLARIS Centre.

It is an exceptionally nice distinction for us – adds Dr. hab. Sebastian Glatt, the leader of research group at MCB JU and the leader of Cryo-EM Laboratory Team at NSRC SOLARIS. Our everyday work takes place behind the closed door of the laboratory, that’s why the more we are pleased that its effects are visible and appreciated also by the city authorities – he says.

The team led by Dr. hab. Sebastian Glatt received an award for outstanding achievements in scientific and research work in the field of structural biology. Detailed knowledge of protein structures has a high value in many scientific aspects. Research in the Glatt lab ( the name of the laboratory at MCB JU) combines structural biology (x-ray crystallography and electron microscopy), molecular biology, protein biochemistry, biophysics, and cell biology to understand specific regulatory mechanisms of protein synthesis.
