The first X-ray images recorded at POLYX beamline

The first X-ray images recorded at POLYX beamline

13.03.2023
POLYX is a beamline under construction at SOLARIS that is focused on X-ray microimaging and microspectroscopy in the tender/hard energy range of 4-15 keV. A recent publication described the general concept of the beamline and showed first X-ray images measured at POLYX with a white (polychromatic) X-ray beam. Performed experiments demonstrated the possibility of X-ray phase contrast imaging of weakly absorbing test samples and focusing of the X-ray beam with polycapilllary optics for X-ray fluorescence imaging of elemental distribution inside samples.

Structural basis of transposon end recognition explains central features of Tn7 transposition systems

Structural basis of transposon end recognition explains central features of Tn7 transposition systems

23.02.2023
Transposases are proteins crucial for the mobility of transposons – genetic elements that can move within genomes. In prokaryotes, this process can lead to the horizontal transfer of virulence genes, contributing to the emergence of novel superbugs. SOLARIS Centre users have solved a 2.7 Å cryo-EM structure of prototypic Tn7 transposase TnsB interacting with the transposon end DNA.

Fabrication of wormhole-like YSZ and Ni-YSZ by the novel soft-hard template CTAB/NaCl-assisted route.

Fabrication of wormhole-like YSZ and Ni-YSZ by the novel soft-hard template CTAB/NaCl-assisted route.

15.02.2023
A novel one-pot synthesis route leading to the formation of a wormhole-like structure was developed for the successful fabrication of porous YSZ and Ni-YSZ systems.

Understanding photosynthesis at atomic resolution

Understanding photosynthesis at atomic resolution

07.02.2023
SOLARIS users have studied photosynthetic processes at the atomic level. The result was obtaining high-resolution cryo-EM structures of the cytochrome b6f protein complex, one of the key proteins of photosynthesis.

Beating the limitation of the Néel temperature of FeO with antiferromagnetic proximity in FeO/CoO

Beating the limitation of the Néel temperature of FeO with antiferromagnetic proximity in FeO/CoO

24.03.2023
In our studies we investigated the influence of the proximity of the antiferromagnetic CoO layer on the magnetic properties of ultrathin wüstite (FeO) films. Comparative Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements for MgO/FeO/MgO(001) and MgO/FeO/CoO/MgO(001) show that the neighboring CoO layer can significantly enhance the ordering temperature of wüstite. The TN of CoO in the FeO/CoO bilayer was determined with a use of X-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) measurements.
