Electronic structure studies of Chiral Quantum Materials.

Electronic structure studies of Chiral Quantum Materials.

29.05.2023
Led by Professor Antonio Politano from the University of L’Aquila, Italy the team together with beamline scientists from URANOS beamline has identified and characterized a new chiral material, CdAs2, which exhibits a rare Kramers-Weyl fermion. Chirality, which refers to the asymmetry in the spatial arrangement of molecules, plays a crucial role in a wide range of scientific fields, including biochemistry and materials science. Chiral crystals exhibit well-defined handedness due to the breaking of inversion, mirror, or any other roto-inversion symmetries.

Molecular mechanism of a potent antibiotic produced by a sugarcane pathogen

Molecular mechanism of a potent antibiotic produced by a sugarcane pathogen

26.04.2023
Albicidin is extremely potent bactericidal antibiotic active against problematic Gram-negative bacteria however its mechanism of action was not understood at the molecular level. Now, a collaborative research team of Polish, German and British scientists used cryo-electron microscopy facility at SOLARIS to determine structure of albicidin bound to the Escherichia coli DNA gyrase complexed with 217 double-stranded DNA fragment.

Surface and interface properties of TiO2/CuO thin film bilayers

Surface and interface properties of TiO2/CuO thin film bilayers

12.04.2023
Thin films, particularly in a form of bilayer, are emerging as potential photocatalysts and photoelectrodes but the challenging aspect consists in the technology and investigation of the interface between both constituents. Thin film bilayers of TiO2/CuO were prepared by means of sequential reactive magnetron sputtering (Figure 1a) in Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) system. It was demonstrated that under certain conditions both X-ray reflectivity XRR and optical reflectivity measurements can provide information concerning the interfacial properties. X-ray absorption spectroscopy XAS in the surface sensitive mode, i.e., Total Electron Yield TEY, was carried out at SOLARIS centre and allowed to draw conclusions concerning the oxidation state of copper and the electronic structure of the grown materials.
