High-temperature activation of molybdenum catalysts for propylene metathesis

03.06.2026
In collaboration with the research groups of Prof. Piotr Kuśtrowski (Jagiellonian University) and Prof. Jarosław Handzlik (Cracow University of Technology), as well as with Dr. Alexey Maximenko (SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre, Jagiellonian University), the group led by Prof. Piotr Michorczyk developed a simple and efficient method for generating active sites on the surface of oxide catalysts for olefin metathesis. The researchers demonstrated that short-term treatment of a molybdenum-based catalyst in a propane stream at 550–650 °C increases its metathesis activity by one to two orders of magnitude.

Optimizing Cryo EM Data Collection: New Study Provides Evidence Based Guidelines

16.04.2026
A new publication presents a comprehensive analysis that strengthens the foundations of single particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo EM), one of the most powerful techniques currently available for visualizing biological structures at near atomic resolution. The research was conducted by a team of scientists from the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Centre, in collaboration with a representative of the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology at the Jagiellonian University.

Imaging 3D orientation changes in semicrystalline materials with submicron resolution.

01.04.2026
The team of researchers working at the CIRI beamline conducted advanced studies on imaging 3D orientation changes in semicrystalline materials with submicron resolution, using state of the art infrared microscopy. By employing the O PTIR technique and linearly polarized radiation, the scientists were able to track subtle changes in molecular orientation within polymer materials subjected to various thermal processes with exceptional precision.

Coexistence of Dirac Cones and Fermi Arcs in Graphene/WTe2 Heterostructure

25.03.2026
Scientists from the University of Lodz’s Faculty of Physics and Applied Informatics, together with their collaborators, utilising the SOLARIS synchrotron radiation source, have unveiled insights into the electronic properties of a novel van der Waals heterostructure combining graphene and type-II Weyl semimetal Td-WTe2. Published in the journal Nanoscale, the study reveals the coexistence of Dirac cones from graphene and Fermi arcs from WTe2, demonstrating how interlayer interactions reshape band structures for advanced quantum applications. This discovery may pave the way for twistronics and next-generation electronics by highlighting tunable quantum phenomena.
